The Drawing Course for Children

The Drawing Course for Children

Objectives and Details

Early exposure to art has been proven to promote brain activity; it encourages creativity, inventiveness, and expression of ideas and images. Art making builds self-esteem and confidence, a confidence which is transferred to other educational areas. Art education also helps children understand other subjects: It has been proven that if you draw what you are learning about – and vice versa -, you will learn it much faster and retain the information much longer.

The core objective of the program is learning the drawing skill within a structure of student-centered education methods and choice based learning approach: by responding to the students’ own ideas and interests through the making of art. In addition to:

- Improving perceptual and analytical abilities,
- Enhancing critical thinking and problem solving,
- Filling a creative void that children sometimes experience,
- Offering the children a way to both express themselves and relax, through letting go of the fear of making mistakes and gaining knowledge of changing things as they go along.

PROGRAM DETAILS

Part I (16 hours total)
8 sessions/ 2 hours once a week

In Part I, students will become familiar with the basic elements of shape; how these elements are placed in the environment; and learn how to draw – confidently - from references (life and photos). By the end of Part 1, students will work on a project to apply what they have practiced.

Part I Main Objectives

- Develop the children’s drawing ability and enrich their visual observation of the world
Improve the children’s perception of their environment, and their awareness of the detailed surroundings.
- Give the children the freedom to appreciate the fact that in drawing – and life – you may set out for one result and actually end up with an entirely different one.
- Release the children’s creativity; get more feeling into their drawings, incorporate more variety in the elaboration of lines and colors.
- Help children incorporate real objects into their drawing world.

Part II (16 hours total)
8 sessions/ 2 hours once a week

In Part II, students will practice more advanced techniques, get introduced to working with new mediums, and discuss ideas and values related to “art making”. By the end of Part II, students will be given a new project to apply what they have practiced throughout Parts I & II.

Part II Main Objectives

-        Understand the importance of composition
-        Design; introducing basic elements and principles of design
-        Figure Drawing; with emphasis on anatomical construction, true proportions, and expressive actions of people
-        Portraiture; making portraits more realistic and balanced through capturing faces or likeness on a piece of paper

-        Landscape and Environment; on how to deal with indoor environments and outdoor scenes, and to consider every scene and element suitable for a drawing project
